Delete Users

Hello -

We are running Portal 7.4 and have the need to create a component (portlet or jsp page) that will delete a list of users from the portal. Ideally we would like a designated user to select a file containing the usernames of the users we want to delete. The component would extract the usernames from the file and remove the users from Vignette Portal.

Essentially we are after a batch delete mechanism that will read a list of usernames from a file and delete the user accounts.

Has anyone out there done somehting like this before or how does one go about doing this? Does the Vignette API provide for such functionality?

Any thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated.

As for whether you can use the API to delete users, the answer is yes. I'd first recommend that you read the Configuration Guide's sections "Configuring User and User Group Data" and "Configuring User Authentication." The Developer's Guide also has a section on "Users and Access Control " that touches on the API. After you're familiarized with how Portal handles user management and authentication, you'll want to get the public API.

Here's a rough example in JSP form with a few embedded comments. Your exact implementation is going to vary depending on your configuration, etc.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. One follow up question. We use LDAP for authentication and the users will be removed form there via a seperate process. I gather since they are removed from LDAP via another method I do not need to do that from within Vignette. If all I want to do is get rid of the user account from Vignette do I need to concern myself with removing the user from the Authentication System through Vignette.

Seems like all I need to do is remove them from the User Management System, is this the case?

The answer is "it depends," because of the many possible ways you can configure authentication and user management. You're probably going to need to do some testing to see what works for you. If your user management is configured to use the same LDAP server, it might be as simple as you needing to periodically run user_manager_config with the -cleanup option (see the Configuration Guide). If you're using LDAP for authentication (and managing those accounts outside of Portal), but using SQL for user management, then yes, you'd skip the part about deleting from the authentication side of things.
