There is nothing mentioned in the DataType Section ( In Devloper Manual) for Naming convention.

I don't know if there is or not - but from a programming stand-point - anything which can be used internally as a variable name, function name, XML tag name, XML attribute name, etc. - should not contain white-space nor odd punctuation characters. It is possible to make things work even if that guideline is not followed, but it tends to make things much more difficult.
Labels, on the other hand, are generally used to provide "nice names" for programmatic entities - and those can usually contain white-space and/or punctuation characters.
