Simple External Task hangs in WorkFlow

using all latest versions

I have a workflow with an external perl filelist task. the task is called and runs to the last line perfectly. however, the task never exits and the workflow hangs. The script runs fine from a prompt.

replacing the entire contents of the perl file with a single "die" statement produces the same hang.

what am I missing?

I removed that external task and created a new (dummy) one, setting the command to c:\windows\system32\ping.exe.

ping.exe returns immediately without params (showing syntax help), however the WF job hangs with this task "in progress". The next step never starts.

What the heck is going on?

IPM is attached. All external files and tasks are present and work.

If your external task script doesn't instruct the task to transition, the only information available to the workflow engine is that the task is in progress.

Remember that an external task can kick off long running processes in the background. Workflow engine does not take the exit of the external task as a signal to transition task. You can have multiple tasks that the current external task can transition to. So that information can only be supplied from within the external task as well.

It does not look like you ever done this before. Of course "ping" hangs.

It is your (External Task developer) responsibility to properly transition External Task on completion.
Read WF Guide and search DevNET, there are samples. Take a look at this code, the usage of TeamSite::WFtask::CallBack method.
