Database connectivity issue from an .ipl file

Hi everyone,

We recently had a migration of the Teamsite server, Database Servers, Web servers to new machines, where-in the OS upgradation from Win 2k to Win 2k3 is also there.

After migration, we are facing this issue of database connectivity from the code written in the .ipl files. For database connectivity, we have used the DBI perl module's connect method.

If I try to execute the .ipl file directly from the command prompt, the database connectivity is successful alongwith the data being fetched successfully from the database server.

Can anyone please help out what can be the reason for the same? How can it be fixed?

So how/when does it fail? And what is the error message you are getting?

We have implemented the database connectivity in the DCT itself. After selecting the Presentation Template corresponding to the ipl, when the DCT opens up we try to fetch some values from the database and populate the same in a combobox on the DCT.
So, here while connecting to the database, using DBI->connect() method, an error is thrown, saying -
"A problem was encountered trying to parse the datacapture.cfg file for type test_downloads. Please contact your system administrator."
with Root Cause mentioned as:
"java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Prototype list is either null or empty."

You can not run Perl directly from the DCT, there is no syntax for it. (And can not be, it's Client side execution thread).
You can do this sort of things with FormAPI callServer or from presentation Template on generation

Sure you can, it can be an inline call. It is run only at form instantiation. Yes also callservers as you pointed out will work. If he ran the test from the TS server command line everything should be good.

I think we need to see some code samples to see what is really going on.

Yeah, I know... Perhaps I've taken "We have implemented the database connectivity in the DCT itself" too literally. Agree, we do need code otherwise it's all speculation

FYI, I executed the .ipl file from the command line, using iwperl.exe.

Please check the code snippet below that we are using in one of the .ipl files, in which we have implemented the database connectivity. The same .ipl file was working perfectly fine before the migration.

Suggest you post complete IPL and complete DCT as attachments - Maybe the FolderConfig perl module you reference also.

Error message suggests that your ipl doesn't return anything when called from the DCT (presumably as an inline).

Not sure off hand what the effect of using iwpt_output in an inline would be though I do suggest that the IPL would benefit from adding some logging (to a file) so that you could determine the point of failure.

The IPL posted is the complete IPL file.
The FolderConfig perl module just has the connection string variables, $db_connection_string, $db_user, $db_password, defined inside it.
And we have assured it, that the code breaks when DBI->connect() function is called.

You're missing a BEGIN { ... }; block that defines one or more required environment variables - search the forums and you'll find dozens of threads like this

But I am just keen to know, whether tempering with a system env variable and that too the System's Root, which is actually a constant for every machine, doesn't have impact anywhere in the working of Teamsite or anywhere on the machine itself.

The tampering (as you call it) is completely localized to the script - and has absolutely no effect on anything outside the scope of the script.
It is needed because the environment information you're used to having from your own command prompt / shell is not necessarily included within the context of the script - so you have to provide the missing pieces.

One alternative solution is to configure iwwebd to pass-through certain environment variables to CGI programs -- this works in some instances, but in other instances it will still have no effect.

Providing the missing pieces is ok, but using any another alternative, we will be ultimately setting the environment information only, in my case, its being the System Root.

Could you please elaborate more about iwwebd and how can I configure it?

iwwebd is an instance of the Apache web server used to host the TeamSite GUI.
Read the manuals provided by Interwoven.
Read the manuals available on-line for Apache.
Look for information about environment variables, pass through, etc.
