Resize on Insert

I've been trying to resize an image when it is inserted into MediaBin, but it looks like the image size transform only affects the thumbnail when used in an insert task? Is there any way to change the size of an inserted image without using a retrieval task?

Is there a reason why you are resizing on ingest? It is always recommended that you put the highest quality image/asset in MB without modifying it so that you can transform it in various ways while retrieving it from MB.

Mostly to save time when we want to retrieve the images. We have a set of specific images sizes we plan to use, and we'd like to spend the time converting the images once when we insert them rather than every time we extract them.

So is there really no way to resize an asset either while or when it has been inserted into the database?

The work around I'm playing with is to insert the asset, then extract the asset using a resize task, and then insert the resized asset. Is there a better way to do this?
