Hello Jesse,
Great question! You’ll see from the Release Notes that WEM 8.1 is a “feature rich” release. Please review this list carefully as it might help you take the right decision based on your project and context. In that list of features, there are 2 items that should definitely lead you to selecting WEM 8.1 right away instead of VCM 8.0.x:
<![if !supportLists]>- <![endif]>If you are using the Rich Media Services module OR if you have projects requiring the use of media content, what RMS used to provide is now completely “built-in” the core product. The Media content types and the Media Management functionalities are available out of the box, which makes deployment, support and of course the user experience much easier (there’s no more “rich media management console”, it’s all done from the V8 user interface). By the way, these features are available to all customers as part of the upgrade, even if you have not licensed the RMS module in the past. Note that many of the RMS features like thumbnails or bulk uploads have been extended to the whole product (e.g. bulk upload of static files, thumbnails for static files…)
<![if !supportLists]>- <![endif]>If you are using the Inline Links for Ephox custom widget or the Object Type Modeler extensions (previously available in the “Content Workspaces Extensions”), those are also “buit-in” the product now. For instance, enabling inline links in Ephox is just a checkbox at the widget configuration level. These two extensions can be complicated to deploy and to support on VCM 8.0.x, and of course having them built-in in WEM 8.1 simplifies things a lot. Also functionality it goes much further in terms of “inline” link and media management.
Hope this helps,

Bertrand, Supposing we were planning to get started on an upgrade in the next month or so, is there any guidance as to what the advantages of 8.1 are over 8.0SP2? As an organization we are generally quite conservative about going to latest releases because sometimes there are service packs that follow shortly after them. That said, I want to make sure we aren't making a bad decision by upgrading to 8.0SP2. Note: if we upgraded to 8.0SPx we would likely continue to run that for 12-18 months before doing another upgrade. Thanks!

Hi Kalyan,
The documentation you need for upgrading from 8.02 SP2 to WEM 8.1 is:
<![if !supportLists]>- <![endif]>First the Release Notes: https://knowledge.opentext.com/knowledge/llisapi.dll?func=ll&objaction=overview&objid=18667532
<![if !supportLists]>- <![endif]>Second the Upgrade Guide: https://knowledge.opentext.com/knowledge/llisapi.dll?func=ll&objId=18495283&objAction=browse&viewType=1
Finally, if you are running any of the extensions mentioned below (OTM or Inline Links), the “Content Workspaces Extensions for 8.1” package contains an “How to Upgrade” document in order to switch to the productized feature. You can download the package from there:
https://knowledge.opentext.com/knowledge/llisapi.dll/Open/WEM_Extensions
Please note that WEM 8.1 supports upgrades from VCM 8.0.2 (or latest cumulative) only. As an example, VCM 7.3.1.1, VCM 7.4, VCM 7.5 and VCM 7.6 customers will to upgrade to WEM 8.1 will need to run the following upgrades:
<![if !supportLists]>- <![endif]>VCM 7.3.1.1, VCM 7.4, VCM 7.5 and VCM 7.6 to VCM 8.0 SP2 (one step)
<![if !supportLists]>- <![endif]>VCM 8.0 SP2 to WEM 8.1 (second and final step)
Thanks,

Hi Bertrand, Thanks for information provided regd the advantages. We have recently upgraded to 8.0 SP2 from V7.3.1.1. Could you please let us know if its easier to upgrade from 8.0SP2 to WEM8.1 and is there any documentation for that? Also we don't use the RMS but we do use inline links currently. How is this going to effect the upgrade process to WEM8.1. Thanks, Kalyan
