Ideas for getting data in v8

Hi,

In our v7 code, we have several customizations that would get data that was required to support a content instance by searching the current project (or parent project) for other content. The data may be used to populate a drop down or something like that. Now, with v8, users are able to create content in either a channel or a project and on top of that, they don't pick the project until after the content instance is created. So, I was just wondering if others are running into that same situation and what you were doing to handle it?

In that case can you change logic to look in channel or subchannel (anyway needed for publishing) instead of project or subproject ??

But, what happens if the user is creating the content from the Project folders? The user doesn't need to associate to a channel immediately. I'm talking about seeding the content instance during creation (for example, drop-down selections, default values, etc.)

This is the problem with having two different entry points when entering content in v8, right? If the user comes in from the Project side, no Channel is available. If the user comes in from the Channel side, the Project is not selected until after the content instance is created.

To elaborate further,

Content is stored only in a project. Then it is associated to a channel(s). Content must be associated to a channel (even if just the Unassigned Channel) to be published.

Therefore the content always be associated to at least one channel. It will be stored in a project.

Thanks... so, this is what you are doing with your customizations? It would be something like this:

if the content was created in a project folder, then grab the data from a named project within the same parent folder

else

if the content was created in a channel first, then grab the data from a named channel within the same site

Is that right? And, you are able to reuse that code fine across multiple sites and all that good stuff? It seems like double-work now.

Creating the content directly in the channel was a nice feature, but if OT had the option to force the user to also select a Project folder first, then I could use that, but unfortunately, the user selects the project folder on save of the content instance. Unless, there is some switch that allows you to force it to happen first.
