Archive a VCM site to html

Hi,

Can we archive a VCM site to CD. I know we can vgnexport and get xml. What are the other automated options? One way I can think of is to run a db query that outputs all the records from a certain project folder, then export the results to a html (for which I need help in identifying the Vignette tables for 7.3.1.1).

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Bertrand,

I have installed and tried wget. Nice tool, but it downloads the entire html source from each page, which is too much of unnecessary information. Moreover, I have used the -mrknp option and yet cannot restrict the downloads to current site.

The main html content from the item details page is what I am looking to get.

Any other options?

We’re currently implementing what you are looking for (which is great customer validation by the way J), by productizing the integration between VCM and OpenText Archiving and Records management offering (very popular in the SAP world as it’s the preferred archiving solution for SAP apps.). Archiving will happen at publish time, and will be configurable (which stages, which content types…) also supporting the concepts of renditions (e.g. archiving the raw XML as exposed by vgnexport but also “transformed” versions, maybe in HTML format. There will be a default HTML rendition converting object references into humanly readable text (e.g. channel ID to channel path). This will be available later this year (exact timeline TBD). That’s if waiting is an option for you… If not then you might want to write a standalone Java program using the VCM API to fetch the content then create the archive in the format that suits you.

Assumptions:

1. You only need part of the HTML from an item details page

2. The HTML you want has standard tags that you can use to extract - like a "start" and "end" tag between which you need the HTML content

Option 1:

Create a .sh script that reads a file with a list of URLs, and does a "wget" on each URL, writes the file, uses "awk" or "sed" or "regex" to extract the content you need

Option 2: If you have VBIS

Do trhe same as #1 using VBIS

Option 3:

Do the same as #1 using Java code.

Still. It’s very nice to have that integration with Archive Server.

Maybe Render would be a solution for Hari’s particular use case? It should be able to generate flat html that can be archived to CD. And I’m assuming you could mount it as a docroot somewhere and view the site from a simple apache server. This would probably give them a snapshot of the site at that particular moment in time.

We had designed a better solution for this problem few years ago with V7.3. for one of our customers. It created page shots at publish time but stored these in a source code repository as html files. The advantage of using source code repository was that we could bring back any version of the site we needed to with minimal effort.

BTW, for full site archival you can use http://www.httrack.com/?to create the full HTML site on a local drive and store the html pages.

I! have installed and tried wget. Nice tool, but it downloads the entire html source from each page, which?is too much of unnecessary information.?Moreover, I have used the -mrknp option and yet cannot restrict the downloads to current site.

The main html content from the i! tem details page is what I am looking to get.

Any other options?

Hi Hari,
If what you need to archive is the final rendered HTML, why not using mirroring tools like wget? (as opposed to archiving the content itself)

Hi,
Can we archive a VCM site to CD. I know we can vgnexport and get xml. What are the other automated options??One way I can thin! k of is?to run a db query?that outputs all the records from a certain project folder, then export the results to a html (for which I need help in identifying the Vignette tables for 7.3.1.1).
Any help? is appreciated.

You could also implement a custom template for that content type that only outputs the html what you need and the execute wget to obtain that html.
