Change branch structure while migrating

Hi,

We are in the process of migrating our backing store to a new server.
Both servers have TS 6.7.1 installed on Solaris.

We would like to take this opportunity to change the structure of our branches, and mainly to change the vpath, eg: /default/main/Pharma/www.mysite.com would now become /default/main/www.mysite.com.

My intention was to use 'iwmigrate' CLT, but as far as I understand, this is not feasible, as it recreates the same structure.

We need to keep editions as well as files properties (history,date,owner,...).

Any advise or help would be very much appreciated.

I've never tried it - but it's worth a shot - navigate to the Pharma branch, select the www.mysite.com sub-branch and see if File > Move is available - if so - try moving it to /default/main/ and see what happens.

My guess is it won't work - but ...

Ghoti is right this will not work. At least not easily. You have a few options.

The hard way
1) Rename present store (call this old store_structure). This will have all your history upto to a point.

2) Create new store with desired branch structure. copy latest files/branches to this store and start life anew with desired structure.

Migrate stores.

When you run out of history on present store. you simply proceed to old store.

The harder way.
Create new store/branches with correct structure. Copy each edition to a workarea and submit starting with oldest.

Depending on number of editions this may be a while

[color=#003366][font=Arial]The only way I can think of doing is creating the new branch structure and using copy-to-area and it will preserve the version history.

Note: If you use "Copy to Area" version history will be maintained but there would be a second predecessor link and not a direct link.
i.e. it would say "Version 1 of file A was copied from ."

Also It is a wise idea not to delete the old branch and change the permissions on the old branch so people can't modify their contents.

I also thought about the option to create the new structure and copy each edition in a workarea and then perform a submit & publish. The problem is that it would loose all the history (eg: creation date of the edition) and would increase the size of the backing store, as each edition would contain a new version of the content instead of the "delta".

AFAIK, the "Copy to Area" is only possible within the same store.

I must admit that I am stuck. Any other suggestions?

you should be able to go with Heather's solution, if you do

migrate
/oldstore/default/main/Pharma/www.mysite.com
to /newstore/default/main/Pharma/www.mysite.com

and then copy-to-area
/newstore/default/main/Pharma/www.mysite.com
to /newstore/default/main/www.mysite.com

you will have to keep the old branch structure around, if you want the history to stay available... then maybe in a few years, you can delete the old branches, if you don't need history anymore.

Not super nice as solution, but the best I can think of

hint to IWOV: I've much regretted myself not being able to move the branch structure.
