Step-by-step instructions to set up SampleSite as integration demo?

Hi Guys,

it sound's a bit silly, but: where can i find step-by-step instructions to demo end-to-end integration with the samplesite?

- samplesite is installed on our vcm machine and can be edited and previewed

- we have a delivery stage set up on a remote host, publishing works, tomcat is running

How and where (url) can i see the site as it would be served to an end user? Then do some (content) changes in the vcm, publish and see the changes appear on "the live site" ...

vgn-ext-templating, vgn-ext-samplesite and vgn-furl are deployed on delivery. we've tried an adapted preview url (obviously with host and port replaced): http://<delivery-host>:7080/vgn-ext-templating/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=da291a4cf8a80210VgnVCM1000009e21120aRCRD returns an exception (log excerpt is attached).

Is my thinking wrong or our setup?

how would furl's fit into this setup?

Hi,

I suspect that you are hitting the tomcat port here and not the VCM port. 7080 might be your tomcat port and the sample site is not deployed to work on that instance OOTB. It works on the VCM management port and is furl enabled too.

Using the OOTB sample site should be fairly easy.

All you need to do is to hit http://<installationhost>:<port>/Sample Site and you will be taken to the preview environment for the sample site.

You can otherwise login to http://<installationhost>:<port>/content first and then select the Sites Workspace. After that, select the Sample Site. Please click on the preview ribbon action and you will be taken to the same page as from the above step. All the links shown for the sample site are friendly links.

What we want is to setup the samplesite to work from a "production" point of view serving "end users coming from the internet":

- with no management enabled, exactly as it would be in a production environment

- accessing/running on delivery only

- but integrated with vcm and preview (that's what i meant with "integration" and "end-to-end"): we want to demo the full content lifecycle: editing in the vcm, publishing out to live, seeing changes on the live servers, editing again ...

We deployed vgn-ext-templating/samplesite/furl to the delivery tomcat (also in my mail). What else do we need? How can we serve the site from port 80 (just configure tomcat?)? etc ...

So: What steps are we missing to set up the production/end user side of the samplesite?

Please make sure your com.vignette.installDir Java arg points at the VCM 8.1 install folder. If this setting is not in place, it defaults to some 8.0 hardcoded value.

Stupid question, but I have to ask, are all your Sample Site assets published (successfully J) to the delivery/production stage?

So yes it should be functioning. Can you please share your server.xml file for this tomcat instance? Also I see some HPD related errors in the logs. Are the HPD filters uncommented in the web.xml? (shouldn’t be the case)

Hi Markus, in your server.xml, I do see a context for the vgn-ext-templating webapp, but I do not see one for the vgn-ext-samplesite one that contains various elements (e.g. display views)

If you’re planning to use HPD, then it’s ok to have these lines unconfigured. Just trying to eliminate potential cause of issues.

Hi Markus, it should look like this. The deployment method depends on the app server. For the sample site in the preview environment, it’s probably Weblogic you are using for the default embedded preview.

There's one remaining issue: if i have the dependencyManager enabled the site does not reliably update when i publish content.

If i do "dynamicDependencyMgmt=false" for the production stage, updates go through as expected.

How can i troubleshoot this?

Setting the flag “dynamicDependencyMgmt = true” will be indicating that HPD is configured on the CDA webapp. (vgn-ext-templating). There would be other settings as well within the CDA, for hpd to be properly working. (eg. Updating/Uncommenting the relevant hpd entries within the web.xml).

If you have done all those and post publish if you are not seeing the invalidations happening properly, you can check the DA logs if the cache clearing calls are passing or not. Also check the pg-trace log to see if the page is being rendered afresh and if the components are rendered from cache or being regenerated.
