Optimal number of folder levels?

When our MediaBin system was first set up and the folder structure was established, it was consistent for everything and went a maximum of 6 levels deep from the root. Since then, various people have rearranged and it is getting fairly cluttered and performance has diminished. I am in the process of setting some standards and would like to know, as a rule of thumb, what is the maximum number of folder levels there should be for optimum performance.

Thank you. I had actually already read that and was just hoping to get something more specific...perhaps what others use for guidelines on maximum number of levels deep the folders should go. We have a lot of categories, subcategories, sub/sub-categories, etc.

A lot depends on how you have set up access levels. Unless you configure a custom setting, we have a rule that even if you have "no access" to a folder, if you have access to anything below it you are still shown enough to navigate to the content you can reach. This means that as son as the server observes that a user has "no access" to a folder it is forced to do a recursive search for subfolders even if none exist. There is a setting to turn off this behavior that will improve performance. Let me know if this looks as if it might be a problem.

The other possibility is that your ContainerSecurityCache needs to be increased.

The giveaway that security is your problem is if browsing is considerably faster when you log in as an MB admin.

Sorry for the delay in responding. This is probably the issue . We have a lot of folders set to "No Access", with all of the sub-folders of that no access. We don't want certain users to see those folders at all. I would love to have more information on increasing performance for that.

We are about to upgrade - is this something that will still be an issue in 4.61?

Oh, and be sure you have your clients set up to implement folder pagination. That will drastically improve browsing performance when the number of assets per folder gets large.
