Vague Error : "An error occurred during PT compiling"

I am trying to trouble shoot an error regenerating pages in Teamsite.
I am running Teamsite 6.7.2 SP1 on Linux.
When I try to regenerate a page I get this following error:

_breadcrumb.html
Folder: /about
Comment: An error occurred during PT compiling. Please see more details in log files.

I found a support post which talks about a similar error but it was not very helpful, https://support.interwoven.com/kb/kb_show_article2.asp?ArticleID=60710.

If this is a permissions error if makes me winder which user has the error? I am logged as a master. Is the owner of the OS process, the owner of the WorkArea?

I am stumped,

The support link you have in your post comes into picture if PT is being compiled successfully and you dont see the preview of the page that is being generated/regenerated.

But in your case error says "error occured during PT compiling". Even though you are regenerating it would be good if you can check if there is any change in your PT.

When I run the PT from the command line it compiles and displays correctly. I am using the method described in the "How to debug presentation templates" thread.

Thanks for correcting me. I was thinking anything regarding manifest files would give us error alert but after recollecting figured tht it would be in the logs but as a alert it would throw different alert message.

Few months back I had to face the same issue and also had to go back and forth with support until finally they fixed it as Patch1. Had a post too on Devnet "preview returns black page"

Now I get it. Thanks anyways.

This can happen (though it was supposed to be fixed in 6.7.1 SP1) if you accidentally submitted some of the zz_tst preview files. If you submit them (typically iwsubmit) and then deleted them, TST cannot reuse the name. In SP1, these files are marked as private and won't submit, but I do not think that will fix the issue if you did it in pre SP1.

What is the preview limit set to in iw.cfg ?

I saw a similar article about this for Windows and Solaris, however since it was not for Linux I did not try it. Also it refers specifically to previewing.

I have tried it now and it did not make a difference with my specific issue.

My issue occurs when I am trying to regenerate a page. Also the errors specifically states a should check my logs, however, I cannot find any reference to the failed regen in ANY log. I have searched through the entire /local/logs tree.

Can you open a shell and run iwpt_compile from the command line ?

Have you made any changes recently to the TPL ? I have seen this happen a number of times, without a discernible error.

never mind Andy, he already replied to one of my posts that .. he was successful in compiling the PT through command line and was able to get the desired result.

I do not think that I submitted any zz_tst preview files. How would I know if I did? I have the following files in place:

you can use iw_pt_compile to sucessfully regenerate a page, but you cannot regenerate with the GUI ?

TS in 6.7.1 does new impersonation with iwutild, IIRC, that should be running as root and will be able to change to the appropriate user to regenerate. Can you check to see if this process is setuid ?

No, it seems to be running as root. I checked my Linux install and it was not setuid either. So IWOV must have changed from setuid to another to way to execute it as root.

I only have the one branch.
However I did change the iwutild-cfg file to logging to debug and now I can see the following error:

I am the "polsen" user. I am an LDAP user on the Windows Domain Controller. I do not have a local "polsen" account on the the server.

I bet that is it. I have no idea how to proceed. But you may build a local account and try it. My guess is that it is an issue with LDAP. You may need to ask support. The good news is that most Unix implementations use LDAP so this must have been seen and resolved before.

If you're trying to run with a "non-OS" user - you cannot use the standard PT compiling - you have to use XSLT.

Whether or not the GUI commands for Generate and Regenerate understand this distinction is anyone's guess (I haven't had to deal with non-OS users [yet])
