The target has to be a (or within a) workarea in the destination branches

one way is to achieve this is use multidefination deployment. in each definition you can use same branch as source area and one branch from set of branches as target area.
you can approach to OD manual to create multidef deployment configuration file.

why do you want to do this? Can you explain? Is it gonna be a recurrent \ scheduled deployment?

Thanks for your reply. I've got some 70 odd sites to maintain and corrsepondingly many branches. My aim is to whenever I make any changes to the templates, styles or images, I want to push it from the master branch to all the other branches.

I would write a workflow in that case with an external task which updates the attached files to the respective branches. Deployment would not be that good an idea

you can use iwupdate CLT to update the respective workarea with the modified content.
