payload adapter

I am going through payload adapter type of deployment. I understand the basic idea that it deploys based on condiins. I dont understand the basics, what is "payload" and "adapter" in payload adapter deployment ?

Adapter is a plugable interface. In OD there are two types of adapter, they are:
1) Payload
2) Delivery

example of payload adapters:- CVS, PVCS, VSS, Starteam,Websphere portal, Weblogic portal etc.,

...Meaning extracting the code and content from the above mentioned repository and then deploy to any target system/area.

Delivery:-

....Meaning deploy the code and contents to a target system/area and then from there deploy it to Application servers, SQL DB, Portal servers etc.,

To carry out payload adapter deployment, do I need a separate interface ? how do I get it ?

Just a theoritical question, why is it called "Payload Adapter" ?
