Removing a Portlet

Unsharing a portlet from the server console is not removing it from individual sites.

My intention is to remove a portlet from being rendered. I don't want to delete it. This particular portlet is shared across 40 different portal sites. I tried the "Unshare" option from the server console,  but it does not seem to work as I expected

Once unshared the portlet is missing from the 'Portlet List" of the individual sites and I also do not see it displayed when viewing the 'Navigation Tree' for the site. But, once I click on the individual "Portal Pages" the portlet is seen. Does unsharing not make a portlet unavailable to a site. I do not want click on all individual sites and remove the portlet from the page manually.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Hari, you have 2 choices: remove the portlet from each page, or delete the portlet instance. You possibly have another, third, choice as well depending on how your pages were designed: removing the Query component from the Preview Site and publishing.

Sharing simply makes a portlet available to a site administrator, un-sharing doesn't remove existing portlet instances appearance on pages. It's intended as a way to determine which sites have access to which portlets.

What could help speed things up is this: Duplicate the portlets in question from the server console, then delete the original instances. Deleting a portlet instance will remove it from any pages it appears in. Also, depending on the verison of portal (and I forget the details for your version) but if you look at the portlet types, then click on the instances tab for the Content Publisher Type, you may be able to work more effectively from that list.
