How to retrieve the primary channel from a multi channel associated content item

Is there a way to retrieve the content Item's primary channel (First channel) associated to the content item if there are multiple channels associated to this content item. I am able to get the first channel from the channel list but which works fine in preview but in live, the channel list gets shuffled and the first channel doesn't necessarily correspond to the first channel in the preview.

Any pointers?

There is no notion of ordering, or primary/secondary channel associations on a content item. The order they appear in memory is undefined.
