How to run IManquery to check for empty field

Hi,

I am trying to run an IManAndQuery to check for all documents of type MIME and message id as null but the query is returning an error, can anyone please help?. Following is the query:

IManAndQuery andQuery = new ManAndQueryClass();

IManFieldQuery mimeQuery = andQuery.AddFieldQuery(imProfileAttributeID.imProfileType);
mimeQuery.Values.Add("MIME");

IManFieldQuery msgIDQuery = andQuery.AddFieldQuery(imProfileAttributeID.imProfileMessageUniqueID);
msgIDQuery.Values.Add("");

IManDocuments docResults = (IManDocuments)objSession.WorkArea.SearchDocumentsEx(objManStrings, andQuery);
return docResults;

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I have tried your suggestion but it gives errors,
when i gave " ", it gives the error: "Search parameter invalid"
when i put "null", it says "Access is denied".

Is it because the com api does not have a provision for searching empty fields?

No problem, so the problem is only with null fields? did you try giving a value and search?(instead of null) Your method was invoking exceptions irrespective of whether the parameter was null or not. Thats because you haven't used the AddandQuery. With valid values the search works just fine. Let me see whats going wrong with null values.

Yes, it does seem to be throwing an exception when a null value is passed and when double quotes are passed. Mysteriously passing double quotes works just fine for searches like SearchDocuments and SearchWorkspaces. The code I tried works just fine when values are put in.

Your requirement is not a complex search. ManAndQueryClass is usually used where complex searches are required. While I'm on this why dont you try the conventional method of using SearchDocuments. It would solve your requirement though it may not make use of the ManAndQueryClass. Its pretty simple too. Create Profile search parameters and then add in your requirements. Moreover it accepts the double quotes without a sweat. Let me know if you have any doubts implementing this. Let me research why there's a problem with double quotes in the complex search method.

PS: I guess your code went wrong the first time because there's a small error in the documentation. Also you haven't implemented AddandQuery and added values to both sides of it. You need to make use of AddandQuery to link both the values by AND.

I have used profilesearchparameters and you are right, it accepts double quotes without a sweat but then it returns all values, it does not take "" into consideration. As my requirement is to search for docs that do not have message id, it will not do.

Hi, apparently the server does not support any 'NOT' queries or null searches. Thats why even SearchDocuments fails to do the job. Let me see if we could get this done through a different method.

Has anyone found any workaround for this?

I need to search email documents which custom13, custom14, custom21 and custom22 are null values. But it seems that the search does not support NOT, NULL or even empty strings.

You cannot search for empty values in WorkSite. These can also not be indexed. Therefore it is best practice to use a 'named' value where possible to represent an 'empty' value.

Try to make sure you use values like 'NONE', 'OTHER" or whatever suits your meta-data set best.
