You can use an automatic task called purge.

Actually, I found all I had to do was add a simple automated activity that really did nothing.
I have a different problem but in a similar vein - in a workflow, I do a test to see if the content item is a static file. If it is a static file, then I simply follow a different path which approves, then publishes (setStatePrrovedForPayloadContents, autoDeploymentJob respectively). No matter what I do, from adding a success/fail test to cancel/complete the job, nothing, simple automated activity that does basically nothing, the state of this process is stays in 'openrunning' mode even though all of the activities were either closecompleted or closeterminated. There are no activities left in openrunning state, just the workflow process instance.
Does anyone know how I can get this to go from openrunning to closecompleted or closeterminated?
