Modify URLs in Emails

Is there a recommended approach for replacing the URL generated in the emails (eg subscription email) so that it points to a more "user friendly" name. My customer would like to display alternate URL names that map to the Collab URL. They plan on retaining the OID it is really just the other part of the URL that will be replaced.

I know that this could be achieved programmatically and have identified areas impacted, but wanted to know if this had been implemented elsewhere and how this was achieved

We have a customer which use a reverse-proxy (of sorts) to map a number of different base URLs to their Collab cluster. They also have a few customizations to change the email addresses accordingly. Custom Authentication, SHTML and python etc.. Otherwise the "external" email can be set. It's an OOTB property.

Thanks for the feedback Chris. So are you indicating that there is OOB functionality that allows us to display "end user defined" URLS that map to the link to an object in the subscription responses? If so can you point to where this is in the documentation as to date I have had no success locating this info.
