What is the home directory of my application?

i need to put a file ( favorite icon image ) in the home directory of my site.
I just want to know the path of the home directory.

Is it under the workarea
(...../WORKAREA/bgGlobal/ )
or
under the sites folder
(...../WORKAREA/bgGlobal/fr_FR/sites)

i put the favorite icon in these path and is working fine in mozilla.But it is not working in IE.It is not showing the favorite button while adding to the favorite list in IE.

Can anyone give some input on this.
