We're setting up a site where we would like to use a SmartList query to pull an image from the current channel. Does anyone have a way to accomplish this or have any experience with a different approach to accomplish the same thing?

You could create a simple CTD that has two attributes - name and image. Place the image in the image attribute and give it a useful name. You can use the smart list to retrieve items of that content type in that channel and get the image from there.
