Ok to rename Home channel?

I realize this is a strange one, but I have to ask...

Our business area has inquired about renaming the Home channel on a VCM site (we are on VCM 8.0). We tried this out in a sandbox environment and didn't see any immediate red flags. However, since the Home channel is automatically created for new sites, I wanted to ask if there are any negative consequenses for doing this (e.g., does the product assume the channel at the top of the site map is named "Home"?).

Our business area may also want to name a second level channel "Home". So the site tree path would look like this: "sitename/BaseChannel/Home", rather than "sitename/Home/secondLevelChannel". Should we be concerned with this?

Hi Dex!

I believe the business people are associating the top level Home channel, with.. well.. the Home page of the site. This isn't the case. If they require something different, you can create subchannels and underneath create a "Home" channel. Such as /Home/English/Home - /Home/Spanish/Home etc.

To solve their requirement, I wouldn't rename the built in Home channel, simply because it's not necessary. And also as you say - may have negative longer term snafus unforeseen. Of the cuff, I don't think the product cares if it's named Home or not. But your DSM / DPM site might.

Hi,

It is preferable not to rename the in-built Home channel as there is a possibility of the same being used ( already ) for some link-building and link resolution stuff. This is especially more so if you use ( intend to use ) Friendly URLs.
