Remove item from search drop-down

Has anyone tried/succeeded in removing items from the search drop-downs in the Advanced Search screen?

I've read the manual and many posts on adding fields by editing FieldMapping.xml, and in our current implementation have done that. The issue is, many of the items that come from standardFields.xml are redundant (in our implementation for example, we have an EA call Teamsite/Metadata/keywords, but there is also a Keywords item that is coming from standardFields.xml).

This is causing confusion for users, they aren't sure which items to choose when doing searches. The documentation says that standardFields.xml cannot be edited, but their must be a way to control what goes in those drop-downs.
