Help with simple content sharing issue

I am having trouble with the following scenario:

If I have 2 folders (Folder A & Folder that have their respective authorization groups (Group A and Group b).

If I do not allow Group B users to access Folder A they are unable to associate Folder A content with their own channels.
If I grant Group B users enough privledges to share Folder A content I have to let them edit the content as well.

Does anyone know a way I can allow a user to share content (associate with their own channel) without giving them ability to change it? So far, the only way I can see doing this is to create a custom workflow that utilizes an admin security account instead of the users actual security. This seems very complex for such a simple and frequent issue.

Hi Ron,

Read acess is the default for all users. So the user from Group B will have read access to Folder A by default.

Read access does not give channel association rights.

Basically I just need a way to allow a user to associate content with their channel without giving them the ability to modify the content instance itself.

From all my testing, I have found that I have to grant write access to the content instance in order to allow channel association. I have found no way to allow channel association without granting write access to the instance. This seems like it would be a very common business case as sharing to multiple channels is a core product feature.

Just to make it easier to understand

User add channel associations to Content Instance and not the other way round (irrespective of wherever in UI you initiate the operation from). Thus every channel association operation results in modification of content instance. This is how OOTB Data Model is build and there is no way to change it.
