AJAX Based Content Component 2.0 Portlet Navigation

Hello,

I have a content component 2.0 based navigation portlet running right now on my site and I am interested in converting it to a AJAX based content component 2.0 portlet so that not all tiers of the navigation items are loaded in one shot but instead only the sub navigation channels under the active navigation channel are quired.

Does anyone have a sample or advice on how I can build one?

Is it ok to get a channel object from a contentmanagementID that is passed through a querystring by doing the below?

parentChannelId = request.getParameter("x");

Site theSite = Site.findByName("somesite");

ManagedObjectVCMRef pid = new ManagedObjectVCMRef(parentChannelId);

Channel homeChannel = theSite.getHomeChannel(RequestParameters.requestParametersTopRelationOnly);

parentChannel = (Channel) homeChannel.findByContentManagementId(pid);

What you want to do is not incorrect, only the implementation needs to be more efficient.

It should be something like

Channel parentChannel = null;

parentChannelId = request.getParameter("x");

if(parentChannelId!=null &&parentChannelId!="" && parentChannelId.length() == 40){

ManagedObject mo = (ManagedObject)ContentUtil.getManagedObject(parentChannelId );

if(mo instanceOf Channel) {

parentChannel= (Channel) mo;

} else {

// Not a id for Channel

}

} else {

// Invalid input parameter

}

I am using you are using DPM or DSM.

Thanks Qutub,

Glad to see someone is keeping this forum alive . What i pasted was just the simplified version of the validation but it does seem like your method of getting the parentChannelID is more efficient. I was looking through the API but didnt realize i could use the ContentUtil class to convert a string ContentManagementId to a ManagedObject. Thank you very much this is gonna help me big time! BTW I am using DPM.

I'll keep you updated on how it goes.

FYI - I was able to get a Navigation working which diplayed the first level initially when the page loaded and then call the level 2 and level 3 links through an ajax call. I did notice a performace issue due to the number of queries being made so I decided to go with the cache method instead and scrap the AJAX navigation.
