.png and .component

Whats the difference between .png and .component extensions ? I tried to check both the components by clicking edit button on the side of the component. There is all the details in .component, while there is no detail in .png.
Secondly, when I tried to edit .png , I got pop up message reading "An error occurred while loading component , please contact your administrator."
When I click on the component directly (Instead of clicking on Edit), I get an error "The system has encountered an internal error" and then there is bunch of greyed out exceptions. When I click on the page, it should open just like as when I click on preview, right ?
Please explain this.
thanks

I can't tell you much about the .component other than I imagine it's the specific file extension for components built in livesite.
However, .png are image files. You can read up on this image type here:

As far as I know, the .png files are screenshots of the component previews. When a user clicks on "Add Components", those .png files appear when the user mouse-over a component. And I guess, the file names of the both .component and .png will be (and should be) the same.

correct the png files are optional they are used as part of add component to page to show a visual representation of the component
