LS 3101 - W2K3 - tomcat installation

I'm trying to install LS 3101 on my dev box (which includes TS672SP1+SP and OD621) - under prerequisites it indicates I should install Tomcat first (I intend to use Tomcat). Unfortunately, the instructions in the manual are a bit vague:[indent]Installing on Windows
To install the Apache Tomcat Web application server using the installation package supplied
with LiveSite, do the following:
1. In the LiveSite folder, double click the apache-tomcat-6.0.18.zip file.
2. Unzip this package and move apache-tomcat-6.0.18 folder to the [color=red]required directory. [/color][/indent]It's that last part that has me confused. For Unix installations it clearly says that it doesn't matter where you install Tomcat - but for Windows it indicates that there is a required directory - without seeming to provide the information about what that required directory is!

Does it matter where I put the apache-tomcat-6.0.18 directory?

Support is closed right now - so I'm hoping someone here can provide a definitive response relatively quickly (I'd like to get the install done tonight).Thanks.

Tomcat should be installed before installing LS, nothing matter of installation directory.

As you said that according to installation manual tomcat-6.0.18.zip file is incorporated with TS672SP1+SP.

AFAIK with TS671 tomcat-5.0.28.exe file was incorporated. So with the .exe file, you can install tomcat anywhere as per the choice and then install LS (runtime). Tomcat installation directory and LS Runtime directory both are two different area. Tomcat runs from the services (or its command) while LS runs from the ls-home/runtime command line. LS only use the port of tomcat while it's configuration is totally different. Both cannot runs parellal.

Installing Tomcat server with .exe is the easiest way while unzip the installed packege to a directory (anywhere) need to be configure environment variables like

CATALINA_HOME

JAVA_HOME

.

If there is not a tomcat's .exe file then i suggest to download the apache-tomcat-6.0.18.exe from it's site and install it, port would be 1776. It will required JDK6 so install JDK6 before installing tomcat6.

Then you can install LS 3101 (runtime).

The document I'm looking at was revised explicitly for 3.1.0.1 (not the 3.1.0[.0] manual) and it seems to state clearly that the directory for Unix does not matter, but the directory for Windows does.

If I can put it anywhere and set some environment variables - do you know what those environment variables are? Is it TOMCATHOME?

Or are you basing your answer solely on TS 6.7.1's version of LiveSite? If so, I'd rather wait for someone who's actually worked with the latest version to provide an answer as "things change" and this could well be one of them.

I would agree, that it would be nicer / better if the installation of tomcat was handled directly by the LiveSite installer - but it isn't, so that's neither here nor there right now.

What you've been doing is guessing based on previous versions of the software - which, while it is appreciated that you took the time to do so - is explicitly what I do not want - I'm looking for information from people who are using the same version.

Guessing is fine when dealing with customization implementations - but in terms of doing an install, I really want to make sure I get it installed correctly the first time and not have to go through uninstalling and reinstalling to fix something that could have been avoided from the get-go.

I've opened a case with Support, and I'll respond back here when I get the an answer.

In the mean time, if anyone is using the latest version (3.1.0.1) on Windows and went through this process - I'd like to hear how you managed it.

To answer your question, you can install ApacheTomcat in any directory . However, on Windows we recommend you install it on a directory where the path does not have any spaces so you can put it directly within c:\

That sounds fine - but can you tell me why the documentation doesn't say that and instead says that there is a *required* directory for it? If that's not the case, I would like a BUG filed against the documentation.

Also - do I have to manually modify any config files or environment variables to reference where I put the tomcat directory - or will that (if needed) be taken care of by the LiveSite installer?

I can definitely file a development report to address the wording in the documentation and attach it to the support ticket. To answer your other question, you would not need to make any changes to the Tomcat configurations.
After you unzip Tomcat to a folder, note down that location so that you can put that in when the LiveSite installer asks for it. When LiveSite is installed it creates its own set of Tomcat configuration and startup file that is used to start an instance of Tomcat just for LiveSite.

So - the upshot is that they are saying what you (Faizi) said - but now if it doesn't work I can take it back to them since they should know (I'd rather blame them for bad information than you)

I'm going to try to get through this before the end of the weekend - will post results afterwards.
