can i do that without an iterate?

You didn't say if you were trying to do this in a Form or in a TPL, so here are both:

var containerCount = IWDatacapture.getItem('containerNameGoesHere').getChildren().length;

my $containerCount = @{[iwpt_dcr_list('containerNameGoesHere')]};
