Is it possible to restrict access on a published site?

For example, you don't want a specific channel to be immediately accessible to the public. Visitors of the site should first login and authenticate themselves before they can see the content of the channel (and content below the channel).

Hello Thomas and Ralf! Yes, in WEM 85 you do this using targetting profiles. Create a profile/segment called 'public' that shows only the channels you wish for public, then create another profile/segment called 'registered' (for example) that is allowed to view all channels (or selected channels). The steps for doing this are in the WEM 8.5 Online Help (click on '?" on the content workspace and do a search for 'targetting' and 'profiles' which should give you the information you need).

There are other ways to do this as well in Portal (using segments) but easiest using profiles and targetting in WEM.
