Yup. This is the only way to do it. It's also a real pain if you do something like roll your logs, then archive or (eventually) delete them, especially given how often access.log is written to.

Depending on what the OP means by "audit", going forward, you could also write a servlet filter for contentcenter that does your specific logging or "auditing". We actually do something like this to track usage -- it sets a "last accessed" property for the user when they hit the server. We have a large set of users and if they don't access a server for 120 days (as determined by that last accessed property), their account on the server is automatically removed. This is obviously quite a bit more intrusive than just looking at access.log.

I am also not sure what is meant by "Audit" and "Usage" in the question but If we want to monitor user actions the iwevents.log would be a good place to check. In the example below one can review the actions taken upon a file. You could filter by username also.
