Is there any way of restricting user from using import functionality completely based on user list or branch/workarea ?

You can remove the import menu from the teamsite UI with the help of UI customization but i am not sure if this is possible "based on user list or branch/workarea " .

Yes,its possible.Go through the restricting access to custom items by TeamSite roles in the UI customization guide.

That's not entirely true.
Pre-671 you could delete and re-add an entry for an OOTB menu item, providing it the necessary attribute so that you could restrict that item by role using the roles_custom.xml file.

671/672 - you can restrict some functionality by role by editing the role definitions via the TS Admin GUI's Manage Roles interface. It's not quite a menu-item-by-menu-item choice, but ... failing that, I believe you could use the same methodology as in pre-671, except that now you have to use userops_custom.xml and then use the Manage Roles interface.

As per the manual(uicg.670.cg.pdf,page 87) "Only links to non-Interwoven-supplied functionality can be restricted by role" and not that which is being given by Interwoven.

and as much as I have done, I have created my own link by coding in ui_custom.xml and userops_custom.xml.
and then I have restricted the user corresponding to the role.

Kindly throw some light.

I haven't tried it in 671 - but in 65 I did it as I mentioned.
I don't really think there's anything inherent in 671 that would prevent the same ["hack"] solution from working.

You should tell us which version of TeamSite you want that functionality on. In TS671/672, in the administration tab, under the manage roles link, click edit on a role. Look for "New and Imported Content" and click on "More Detail"
Uncheck the Import, then do a quick iwreset. That role should not have Import functionality anymore.
