non-printing components?

Hello,

I wish to make some components that will *not* appear when the page is printed. In the old days of hand crafted html, i used to use a print stylesheet and set the "display" attribute of these elemnts to none, but this doesn't really work with Ls components: the element doesn't print, but the space reserved on the page is still reserved, so i wind up with the same page, but with white squares where the elemnst used to be. Are there any tricks to making "non-printing" components?

Which version of livesite?
Can you pass some parameter when a page is being printed?
Is it a specific component ? (you may need an external)

you might need to develop a custom layout to account for this when you change the stylesheet.

I can't pass a parameter when printing (i.e. i don't have a "print this page" button, i just rely on the user hitting the print button on his/her browser)

It's a whole bunch of components, some "normal", some external, which create various secondary navigation features, etc, which are not needed in the paper (printed) version.

How a rendered page gets printed is up to the browser's rendering engine, if you do not have a button for "Printable Format" which can pass appropriate parameters to components and generate a page for printing, there is nothing we can do unfortunately.

I understand that, my specific problem is that even if i set a given block's display attribute to "none" in the print css (ie within the @media print section of my stylesheet), the block is not displayed but the "holder" that livesite has built around it for positioning does not collapse. I wind up with big blank white rectangles around where my "non-printing" components are (non) displayed. I guess my fundamental problem is that, whilst livesite can allow a component to grow (at least downwards), it does not allow a component to "collapse" to less than the width you reserved for it when laying out the page. I was hoping that there was an easy way or workaround to fix this, as i can't imagine i'm the first LS/SP user to come up against this problem, but it looks like the solution is going to involve (yet more) custom development.
