API Search doesn't support special characters

I created a wrapped API search to perform Workspace and Folder searches using Name and/or Description as the SearchParameter and it has worked without any problems. However, recently one of our in-house applications has been calling these wrapped search methods with a name parameter that includes special characters such as *, [], ?, .

Although Worksite allows you to create workspaces and folders with these characters in the name, if you use the FileSite UI, Desksite UI, or API to search it doesn't find them. It looks like the search paramater is truncated at the first occurance of any of these characters.

Example:
Workspace Name: "Clients A, A1"
Requested Workspace search string: "Clients A, A1"
Actual Workspace search string : "Clients A"

Does anyone know if there is a way to ignore wildcards in the API search?
I haven't been able to find a definitive list of special characters in the any of the Worksite API documentation. Does anyone have a list?
