Creating Liquid layouts in Livesite.

Hello All,

I am new to SitePublisher/LiveSite so forgive me for beginner questions.
I am running TeamSite 6.7.2 SP1 on Windows server 2003.
I am trying to set up a custom page layout.

Page 267 - Creating a Custom Fixed Layout

To create a custom fixed layout, you must create a fixed layout configuration .xml file. Fixed
layout configurations go into a workarea-relative folder iw/config/fixed-layout and should
be named descriptive.xml. The name of the file is not shown to the user, but the file must
have an extension of xml.
The fixed layout configuration folder is scanned for changes each time you do anything that
requires a layout. To enable the configuration you must name it with an .xml suffix, place it in
the iw/config/fixed-layout folder and verify that it is a well-formed document and obeys the
rules outlined below.
If the configuration is not well formed or does not obey the rules, then a log message is
generated explaining the problem. If everything is correct, then the configuration is immediately
available for the following operations: create or update site, create page, edit page, and preview
page. No further actions are required for the configuration file to be recognized by
SitePublisher.

I've followed the steps specified using the example XML given in the manual. When I edit a page I don't see my layout as an option under Page Settings -> Layout Options.

The manual says that 'If the configuration is not well formed or does not obey the rules, then a log message is
generated explaining the problem'. but usefully ommits the location of this log message.

Under 'Advanced Configurations and Custom Types' on Page 227 the manual states:

Type definitions are located in the following files:
iw-home/local/config/pagetype-config.xml. This document defines page types, layout types, and supported combinations.

This configuration file doesn't exist?? When I create my new layout do I somehow have to configure a page type to use my new layout?

Replying to my own post in case anyone searches this in the future.

Have now found the following in servletd_out.log

2009-06-01 11:57:20,528 ERROR com.interwoven.livesite.model.fixedlayout.CsFixedLayoutCanvasLoader - invalid fixed alyout config //FERGUSON-K0NVLU/default/main/darren/WORKAREA/darren/iw/config/fixed-layout/descriptive.xml
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: A row with non-zero spacing may only contain areas whose widths are of the same unit of measurement as the spacing.

Row:

Area:

I am sure you have it figured out from your error but FAL (fixed area layouts) require that all units for each column within a row are consistent with few exceptions (expecially when you a have liquid column). Post back if you are still having problems with this. Thanks!

Yep, have it working now.
Would be good if iwov could update their docs to state where specifically to look for the error messages.

Cool -- glad to know it is working for you. I guess first instinct for any SP related errors should be to start looking at the servletd logs. More often than not (I would say almost 95% of the time) SP related errors are logged in there.

Unfortunately not everyone is at the skill level where they understand where to look for the appropriate log messages - I'll ask iwov to update.

You might want to take a look at this and see if you believe it has already been filed (if so, add your organization to it).

Note - some (at least two) of these requests has already been taken care of in 672SP1 (TS-6827 and TS-6828)

Hi All,

I'm trying to work on a Fixed Area Layout example. I got an example and tried it (attached herewith).

I added this xml file at location :
default/main/internals/WORKAREA/shared/iw/config/fixed-layout

What next do I need to do? How will this get activated? Will it create a new CSS file corresponding to this? I'm not able to see this layout option when I create a new page...

If your layout (XML file) is valid then you don't have to do anything. If the file is not valid (not just XML well-formedness) then it'll throw errors in servletd log files. Check in there first. If it is truely valid then you should see it just fine without any problems.

I'm not able to see any errors in servletd_out.log file. Layout file is attached in the original post.
Do I need to make changes in pagetype.config file? (I'm facing the same issue as in post http://devnet.interwoven.com/forums_vb/showthread.php?t=29957&forumid=66)
