Issue with presentation File + TS 5.5

Hi Guys,

We are migrating from TS 5.5 + Solaris 8 to TS 6.7.2 Solaris 10.

While migrating the code, we identified a problem where in the TPL file, iwextattr command is trying to set metadata on the output file which does not exist. But this code is working fine on 5.5 but while moving this code file to TS 6.7.2, it is throwing compilation error message.

I am pasting the TPL code snippet here for better understanding

my $sourceDCR = iwpt_get_dcr_name();
$sourceDCR =~ s#^/.iwmnt/#/iwmnt/#o;

I remember there was some capability to inheirt metadata, is it because of that it is working on existing 5.5 machine or any other reasons?

IWOV has been changing, between 5.5, 6, 6.5, 6.7 how to format the path / vpath arguments to the CLT.

Probably iwextattr is expecting a real VPATH (so /store/branch/subbranch/etc), with the /.iwmnt or /iwmnt removed.

Strip /iwmnt from $outPage argument to iwextrattr, and try again.

Donate $50 to a good cause if it worked... surely you're paid more by the hour ;-)

If the file doesn't exist, you cannot set metadata on it - I would be surprised if this really worked in 5.5 - more likely there's something that changed such that while in 5.5 the file did exist and now (in 6.7.2) for some reason it doesn't. I'd consider doing a bit more investigating to try to determine the real problem.

The code you posted performs no tests to make sure that it has a valid, existing, file for either $sourceDCR or $outPage - you should be checking that and handling the situation where the file does not exist correctly in your code (it's for you to determine what "correctly" means in your context).

Thinking about this some more... if it is a compilation error message, I would guess it has *nothing* to do with the iwextattr call (which happens after the compilation, in a subshell, and fail or succeed, wouldn't cause any error for the template generation).

Isn't there more to the compilation error message that you can share with us?

also, maybe there is another issue with code you haven't posted?

Have you used this in 5.5 to generate a new file, not replace an existing file.

Just because it's legacy code doesn't mean you shouldn't fix glaring problems.

That being said - you should at least be able to have the entire iwextattr command dumped into a log file somewhere so you can try to run the exact same command from the command line - to verify whether there's a problem somewhere further up the chain that you're not dealing with; for example: 5.5's vpaths were always /default/main/..., 6.x's vpaths are //servername/default/main/... -- if you're not accounting for that you might be trying to turn a vpath into a non-legitimate file system path. (e.g.: Y://servername/default/main or /iwmnt//servername/default/main)

Isn't there more to the compilation error message that you can share with us?

1) Seriously, how about some more details of the error? a screenshot, a full quote of the message, ... ?

2) You said you played with the code (removed all iwextattr calls) and that "made it work". Can you post this variant of the code?

3) in the posted code, you mix `$iwhome/bin/iwextattr ...` and `/iw-home/bin/iwextattr ...` . Could be a problem in itself

You have to do this yourself - usually within the PT code. This is relatively trivial for Perl-based PTs, especially with the newer version of iwextattr that supports the '-x' flag. You could probably do it in XSLT too - with embedded Java code to make the appropriate calls through CSSDK to perform the operation.
