How to compare DCR to null ?

I have component AppearanceXSL file, which displays selected DCR. If DCR is not selected, then it just displays a line. Noe I want to make sure that . when DCR is mot selected, a message is displayed to select DCR. I have worked following code, pls let me know of correction required

I am pretty sure the first one will not work. Second one looks to be on the right track but a bit off.

You can do this:

First one will spit out opening/closing div tags regardless of the if condition. Second one will spit out div tags only if the if condition resolves to true.

Also note that your if condition logic is invalid. Your logic is saying: if the DCR root element exists then display "no data file selected". You probably need to use xsl:choose/xsl:when/xsl: otherwise.

I recommend you review some XSL basics as well.

No you do not necessarily have to have it. I just showed you one way of doing it. You can probably do it 10 different ways with different XSL / XPath logic. Again you should review XSL & XPath basics.

I am still confused , how to compare dcr to null ? I selected xPath to dcr. Now as per the syntax, anything after the test= shd be in "", till the end of condition. So I can not put dcr_oath in double quotes. If I put it in single quotes, will that be correct syntax ? I tried it different ways, but its not working. Is the syntax below correct ?

You need to learn XSL and XPath. Here is a good reference site.

I gave you one of the ways it could be done in one of the previous posts. Here it is again (make a note of "not") -- earlier you had your if condition incorrectly backwards:
<xsl:if test="not(/Properties/Data/Datum[@ID='dcr_path']/text() = '')">
NO DCR Selected!
</xsl:if>

Like I said earlier this is one way to do it. If you learn XSL / XPath, then you'll find several other ways to do this as well.

When dcr_path is upto "/Properties/Data/Datum[@ID='dcr_path']" , then why do we need root node at the end ? Earlier you mentioned that it can work without root-node. But my question is, how will it work with root-node ? If theer is root-node , then that shd be an error. Secondly, root-node is at the beginning of the path, then how come in here its at the end ?
It looks like, xml of DCT and AppearanceXML which are two different XML docs combined in here. Why do we need root node of DCT included in this xml ?
Pls tell me if its true.
I have been doing reading on XSLT, but strill these confusions are always there, which stop the wheel.

[/html]Note: - the xpath in the previous examples was, I believe wrong (it should have been /Data/External/Properties/Datum - not /Properties/Data/Datum -- at least based on the XML previously posted) - using the // directive makes it a bit easier assuming that there the only Datum's you wish to look at have an ID of 'dcr_path" and you want to look at any/all such Datums.

The test here is for the existence of the DCR element within the Datum - not its value or its text, its existence.

Note - I searched google and found this and then just tested it out on my local machine using an XML/XSL editor (no TeamSite, SitePublisher, etc.).

I was just demonstrating how it could be done. Exact XPath depends on her component setup. In any case, starting XPath with "//" will be easier to code and it definitely works but there are 2 things to be aware of:

1. It is more expensive processing wise -- memory spikes -- and as it is XSL transformations are pretty expensive. It goes through the entire XML document which leads into my second point.

2. It will bring you ALL nodes that match -- in a simple XML document this may not pose a problem. However, in a larger XML document it will bring back / apply to every single node at any / every level in the XML document. That may or may not be the desired outcome.

Last post has correctly pointed out

. In any case just be aware of the fact that along with the ease of use this option may have some performance impact. It may not be a big deal for one component but when you have 10 or 12 components on a page, you'll see the difference during load testing.

Your XPath will be based on whatever XML you are getting. In the component development screen, when you hit preview, look at the bottom left pane and you'll see your component's XML output. Based on that XML, you'll have to figure out your XPath(s).

You should really consider learning XPath / XSL or get some consulting services either from Autonomy Interwoven or hire an independent contractor at least for your initial implementation. I am sure there are a lot of people on this forum that you can hire.

There is one more thing, when I create contentXML file, there is an External element in it. Now when I preview this component, in the xml file a "Result" element is added outside the "External" element. Parent element of this Result element is not External element. So how does this Result element come up ? Does it come as a processing of External element ? But in that case , should not this result element be a child element of External elememnt ?

vpatel has already provided useful information above the usage of the '//' directive -- it is a short-hand notation for finding all elements of (in this case) named Datum - regardless of where they fall within the xpaths. If you want to be more efficient, use the actual xpath.

What the xpath is depends on the XML -- I based my assertion on the XML code that was posted in the initial post of this thread. There it clearly shows Data -> Parameters -> Datum. If that XML was incorrect, or some other XML is being processed, you have to get the correct xpath from there.

Your XSL is processing the contentXML - right? So that's where you get the xpath from.

"DCR" in the code I posted is the name of the element that I believe you were attempting to determine the existence (or lack) of. If I misunderstood - sorry, but again, I was going based strictly on the XML you posted and not dealing with TS/SP/LS semantics.

For XPath, just post your XML and what you want to do and I'll try to give you a solution. Without that XML we are kinda shooting in the dark as for what the correct XPath should be.

Pls note one thing that problem is not selecting the DCR and displaying it. Whenever DCR is selected, its being displayed fine. Problem is regarding the message, when DCR is selected. The message "No Data File selected" shows up even when file is selected or not. So why is the code in the executed when condition is false ?
Does it mean that, cpath provided in the code is not understood and it makes condition true ?

I dont want to capture DCR, when its found, its being displayed fine. I need to make sure that when DCR is found , execution comes to the current execution. In your code, it looks like that , if DCR is found, it will display the DCR rather than going to the current existing code.

Final full XML structure updates slightly when you preview -- that affects the XPath. As you have seen, we are playing the guessing game with some of these XPaths and we will not get the true XPath until we see the full XML.
