Word Connection Mode is nrIndeterminateMode

We have a VB application which starts Word from outlook using the command
Set wObj = CreateObject("Word.Application") but once this is used the connection mode for Autonomy iManage is set to nrIndeterminateMode

If file open or file save is used from word the connection mode changes to nrConnectedMode.

Is there a way to force this change in connrection mode when starting word? I tried creating a new session however this is not updating the connection mode and while objO2KExt.Connect (where objO2KExt As iManO2K.iManageExtensibility) changes the connection mode it is not changed correctly.
