How to change FURLNAME

We recently upgraded the system from WEM 8.1 to WEM 8.5.1, and facing some weird issues with some of the content where it is giving 404 error.

In the title we have a big dash(-) and seems that could be the issue...so I have removed that dash from the title and saved the content but still that page is not displayed in preview site, because the furl name has not been changed. So is there any way we can update the furl name of that content.

See below in furl name has some weird dash, that dash is too big than the norma dash(-), so thinking that could be the issue, that's why I am looking for if we can somehow update the furlname attribute.

Hi Vikas,

From what you mentioned, I believe that you are working with a content instance and you should be able to edit the FurlName attribute by editing the “default” attribute configured on the CTD. The furlname attribute is auto-populated from the content instance.

In the below example, is it that the title attribute is the default attribute on the CTD ?

There is no “default” attribute. There can however bedefault label attributes if you configure attributes to be default label on the CT. These are used to generate a persisted name for a content instance. Apparently the ‘title’ attribute is a default label attribute because the name has the same value as the title attribute.

The persisted name is also used as a default value for the FurlName value if FurlName is not given one explicitly. But as the name is not directly editable, if you have multiple default label attributes, setting the FurlName by editing default label attributes becomes complicated. But the FurlName value can be directly edited by adding a “URL Name” Virtual Attribute to the CT (or by using the ContentItem.setFurlName() API).

About the “weird dash” character in the FurlName, there are certain characters that, when present in a FurlName, get encoded as needed. One of the encodings is that space characters get encoded (by default) with ‘en dash’ characters, which is the dash character you see. I’m not really familiar with the specific times at which a FurlName is encoded, but it is generally done dynamically and they are not persisted encoded.

The XML you presented suggests that the FurlName has been persisted encoded and I’m not sure how that would happen. It also appears that there are additional spaces in the FurlName while there is only one space in the title/name fields. These differences between the title/name and FurlName would explain why the FurlName has not been updated when the title/name value is changed. Again, the name value is used to populate the FurlName value, but only when the FurlName has not been given a value explicitly. This is managed by detecting differences between the name and FurlName values. If their last persisted values are equal when the name is updated then the FurlName value will be automatically updated to match the new name value. But if the last persisted values are not equal then it is assumed that the FurlName value has been set explicitly and therefore it is not overwritten. Apparently during upgrade the initial value for FurlName was set different than the value of the name, which has prevented the automatic update from happening when changing the title/name value.

I came to know about the below scenarios:-

1. If a content is published, then furl name can't be changed because that title/furl name may be use somewhere else.

2. If you want to change the furl name then first unpublish the content, update the title and then the furl name will be changed.

3. If a content is published, then you try to change the title and then unpublish the content and then again you try to change the title then furl name won't be change forever. The only option is to clone the content and use it with whatever title you want.

To work around it, users can modify CTD and pick "Virtual Attribute" (this is another option where you pick Extensible or Datasource atttibute). As part of virtual attribute, you can then pick "Vanity URL".

This will expose "URL Name" field in content input form where users can explicitly update the FURLNAME following a change.

Yes, I failed to mention that the automatic update wont happen if the item is published. And it is correct that if the name is changed while the item is published, and therefore the furl name is not automatically updated, then the furl name will never again be automatically updated. As I explained before, the automatic update only happens when the last persisted name and furl name are equal (and the item is not published). Once they become inconsistent (for any reason) then the furl name is not automatically managed. But you can *always* change the furl name explicitly, regardless of the item being published or not, which again, can be done byadding a “URL Name” Virtual Attribute to the CT (or by using the ContentItem.setFurlName() API). And if you explicitly update the furl name to once again match the name, then the automatic furl name updates will happen again (if the item is not published).

We are in the process of Upgrading WEM 8.1 with WEM 8.5, we even observed that whenever we create a content instance, it takes the title value for FurlName, but after you want to change title with somthing else by updating content instance, that change is not taking place in FurlName system attribute which was introduced in WEM 8.5 i think, we are basically updating FurlName (ci.setFurlName(xxxx)) with in our listener code at the time of saving the CIs. It is working fine for us...
