Hello,

I am working on upgrading our OpenText from 8.1 to 8.5. I am currently working on migrating our sites over. I am aware there are three options -

WEM Motion (too expensive, won't pay for it)
VTT or OpenText Transfer Tool - only works for copying between identical environments
vgnexport/vgnimport

We are stuck with option #3. Here's the problem - when importing sites, and contents, all the CTDs get imported over fine. But what does NOT get imported is the site/CTD association. From what I have gathered, we should export all the CTDs (and widgets if any) first, then sites/contents, then channels.

Here's my problem - there does not seem to be a way to do a bulk import of CTDs and we have well over 50 of them. Am I stuck with having to create a manifest or exp/imp each CTD? Is there a 'short cut'?

The best is that you export all CTDs form the source system and import them into the target system by exporting the root project where the content types are. You can easily get the id of such a project by looking at the URL in the classic console when browsing content types.

Thank you. I tried this and found it only picks up project folders. What about all the CTDs directly in the Content Type Definitions folder?

Use something like this:

./vgnexport -h <server>:<port> -u <username> -p <password> -c resultsLevel=all -c errorPolicy=continue -i <Your base folder where all CTDs are- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXPROJ> -f /<path>.zip -l /<path>.log

This should copy everything inside XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXPROJ (including CTDs and sub projects).

Ok, I am able to import CTDs but the site association is still not happening. Is there anything special I need to do in order to get the CTD to Site association imported? I cannot import contents because the CTD has not been associated.

Did you import the CTDs? There isn't anything special about importing a site with site ctd associations. I usually import the CTDs first, then a site skeleton using the export option -c channelAssocs=false. So export the site without channel associations. Import the CTDs, then import the site skeleton. The CTD associations will be there. If you manually created the CTDs, then the IDs are different and associations won't be there.

Just making sure here...the KB refers to 'pre-7.6'. Does this still apply to migrating data from 8.1 to 8.5??

Ok, I followed the KB item provided by Raju to the 'T' and I am still having issues importing contentInstances because the CTDs were not associated to the site. Seems like no matter what I do, there is no site association for the CTDs. Is this potentially a bug?

Hi Christine,

Very recently we have used these instructionsfor export/import from 8.1 to 8.5. We got the CTD associations with the site.These are the standard instructions for a new site export/import. Post theinstructions which you are using.

I followed the instructions from KB 8035, including the GenSiteManifest. I wonder if I need clean up the db and start from scratch? I was using conflictPolicy=overwrite to make sure things get overwritten to try and pick up the site association. I had tried other ways to import (apparently there are many options) before reading the KB.

This KB (and associated tool) was meant to overcome certain shortcomings that VCM had before 7.6. From 7.6 on, it should be possible to export/import a whole site without serious issues (unless you site is really, really big).

If you are having issues with that you should contact Support.

If your site is too big for export/import then perhaps you should evaluate investing in Motion.
