how to get translated url

Hello,

If we programmatically get a url via  request.getRequestURL() + (request.getQueryString() != null ? "?" + request.getQueryString() : "", the result is something like: 

http://www.mydomain.com/vgn-ext-templating/templates/franklin/layout_franklin_content.jsp?vgnextoid=36a1a9e5a5c67110VgnVCM1000004c00000aRCRD&vgnextchannel=87d0452d57f77110VgnVCM1000004c00000aRCRD&vgnextfmt=default

I'd like to get the friendlier version of this url...how can we do this?  I thought maybe ETLDeliveryTranslator, but this takes place before the page is even generated...we are looking to see the url of the page we are displaying.  How can we extract the final url translation of the page we are displaying?
