Medibin 4.6.1 can't find acrobat
Alligator
We have MB 4.6.1 loaded on our dev server. We installed Acrobat 6 when we installed Mediabin per the install instructions. Our company standard is now Acrobat 9, so we loaded that version but now get the following error: "Warning: Adobe Acrobat Not Found. Page Images are unavailable. Warning: Helping App Not Found, etc.".
Suggestions?
Thanks.

Uninstall the acrobat software, restart the machine and install it again. Make sure you open a pdf doc on the server machine before trying to ingest one into MB again.

Done a couple of times and still can't find the helper app. Same error.

Can you confirm that you are getting this error while trying to ingest a PDF? Are you able to open this said file on the MB application server?
Alligator
Yes to both.

Good luck with the support case. Looks like the way to go.

Thanks for the help.

I was just told by support that 4.6.1 doesn't support Acrobat 9.

Our recommendation is Acrobat Reader (or Acrobat) 7. There have been issues with 8 and 9 that limit their suitability for our purposes (for example, they inexplicably slow down as more and more assets are added until a server reboot).
We are researching new approaches but at the moment Acrobat 7 is the best choice.
On a similar note (not that you asked) we have found that Microsoft Office 2003 with the 2007 compatibility pack does a better job of handling Office 2007 files than Office 2007 does of handling Office 2003 files.

More follow-up from cross examining our expert.
All other things being equal, Acrobat 7 is preferred.
If their are files that give warning messages when ingested by Acrobat 7 it may be possible to disable the warning by manually opening an example file logged into the MediaBin server with the same account that is running the service. If that doe snot work (i.e., no option to disable warnings is given) if we can have the file there may be a way to disable the warning in the Windows registry.
The last point is that Acrobat 8 while not ideal is workable if your ingest volume is relatively small (hundreds rather than thousands per day). There is a known issue with Adobe's code that will eventually require a server reboot but it only manifests itself after several thousand assets have been ingested.
Prior to 4.6.2 there is a problem with Acrobat 8 and 9 that causes jobs to wait 30 seconds prior to completion. The problem is patched for Acrobat 8 in 4.6.2 nd is patched for Acrobat 9 in a forthcoming patch release.
