from the install document, chapter 5.4 Installing Portal on a JBoss Single Server
To install Portal on a JBoss single server:
1. In the Select the Home Directory for JBoss Server box, enter the name of the
configuration to which you want to deploy Portal. You can use any name that is
meaningful for your organization.

in command window, shows

Please enter the JBoss server config name: (DEFAULT: ): what should I input?

I usually use 'default' but I've also used 'all' before and it worked but I believe default is fine for most cases.

You can also create custom configuration that would work with Portal as well.

I input 'default', error message says 'default is not a valid server name'

If that is Jboss 5.x,

Single Server - use 'default' directly or a copy of default folder and rename it as required.

Clustered - use 'All' folder or a copy of that folder and rename it as required.

For Jboss 7.1.x: We dont have support this version with Portal 8.5. Manual installation support is there with the coming release 8.5 SP1.

yes, that's correct - my bad. you should use 'default' and not what I said. if no default then look in jboss directory and see what server configs you have available.

do you mean the config files under /JBOSS_HOME/server/default/conf ? is it jboss-service.xml? seems we didn't add any meaningful name for our orgnization

Config name is the server name which is default in your case.
