Saving a DCR to a default directory

Under the templatedata/data/ directory, we have a long directory tree and users are supposed to save their files in an appropriate directory near the bottom of this tree. (Don't ask why it is being done this way, since it seems to be a result of office politics that I don't understand.)

I would like to know if when the user presses 'Save', I can have the browse dialog box default to some directory below the 'data' directory.

You can with FormAPI in TST 5.5.2. Have a look at the FormAPI examples--I think one of them does set a default DCR name and/or path.
