TeamSite Migration

Hi All,

TS 6.5 SP3

We are planning to migrate our TeamSite server from one box to the other. There will be no upgrade to the TeamSite version, and all the hardware specs would remain same as the existing server. We are planning to copy the content store from the existing server to the new server.

We manage access through ldap and windows groups.

Assuming all the local windows groups are created and user permissions are set.

Our concerns are:

1) Do we need to remap the IDs of the users and groups? Is iwidmap required once the content store is copied?
2) Any other issues we need to be careful of as far as content store copying is concerned?

Hi,

Teamsite Migration is a very sensitive task. Please go through the Teamsite_Migration.pdf manual and then start doing migration. This is for the sake of convenience.

If you're on Windows - and you have local users and/or groups defined on the original server (which were used to interact at least at some level with TeamSite) then yes you will want to do the iwidmap stuff.

Yes we are on Windows. Sorry i should have mentioned that earlier.

Yes i believe we would be needing iwidmap. Had crosschecked with Support as well.

I doubt there are many issues using VMWare anymore. This is quite common and, IMHO a very good idea. I know a number of sites running in this mode.

Just to add to my post, the VMWare instance would be ESX 4.0(HP DL585 G5 as a Standard for ESX servers to be precise). Would you still recommend using it especially for Prod server? I have been assured the CPU/RAM would be quite better than the existing one.

Support site does not talks about any specific ESX version to use but only says

"

Interwoven customers may run TeamSite, OpenDeploy, MetaTagger or MediaBin on VMware Server or VMware ESX and obtain support from Interwoven, provided the operating system listed below being virtualized by VMware is a version that Interwoven products support:

"

Which in our case is Windows and hence passes the test.

I do not know the VMWare product line well enough to answer that. It needs to be the enterprise class VM. FWIW, I installed TS on a VM that was configured improperly and it would shut down after a few hours of inactivity and we had to start from scratch.

I will have a formal check done by Support.

Also do you have data deploy configured within your system running VMWare? Are there any specific issues which you had faced while configuring/using it.

DD runs fine in VM Workstation instance that I have. No issues at all.

Please keep in mind that production TS system in VMWare may not be the best choice -- especially if your VM is not powerful enough you may see performance problems.

Yes i am aware that VMWare running box might not be the best choice but sadly we are not left with enough choice. Our client insists tackling performance related issues with improved hardware. Hopefully that should minimise the performance related issues. We will be using ESX version.

I beg to differ, I think it is an excellent choice. Backup the VM (not the partitions inside the VM) and restore from backup is trivial. Yes perfmormance may be a little worse, but it is not significant.

If you use Sitepublisher or LiveSite on VMWare the performance is disastrous.

Wrong? no; Different? probably.

In general the .page rendering mechanism is a performance hog. With a VM, it only makes it worse.

I'm sure it depends on how many components you have on the page, externals etc. Windows 4G RAM limit is not much help either.

Hi All,

We have the servers available with us now. The servers are VMWare Terminal servers. But for DEV and QA the OS installed is Win 2003 SP1 standard edition. For Production we would have Professional edition but not for dev and QA. As per the compatiblity matrix with TS 6.5 the supported version is professional.

Is any one running TeamSite 6.5 SP3, OD 6.0.2 on standard? Especially on VMWare? or Do you recommend to use professional for DEV and QA as well.

Well since IWOV had only supported Enterprise Edition for 6.5 (SE support came later), and the fact that 6.5 is about 4 years old, you will be hard pressed to find exactly the same setup.

Since this is TS only, you should be fine. Dev/QA servers are often less powerful than the prod server. SE should work for them, however wouldn't you really want the environments to be the same ?

Yes i agree that the environments should be same. But we have some hardware

If it is completely incompatible i will ask for Professional edition. If it is not supported but generally operates without any issues i would prefer to go ahead with atleast DEV.

We will have only TeamSite, Opendeploy and Datadeploy running on the new servers. Yes it is ESX version.

If I were you I would save the 5K on EE and use SE for dev (and QA for that matter).

BTW, why are you not moving up to 6.7.2 ?

Yes we are doing that now. We have decided to go ahead with Standard versions for DEV and QA and Professional for Prod. Hopefully with the standard too TS, OD and DD should work well..

Will keep updating this thread..

We proposed to the customer to upgrade to 6.7.2, but the answer we received is not very good Smiley Happy

they want to stick to 6.5 SP3 as of now.

I have no idea what your configuration is.

However this *sounds* wrong, you can copy a VM from Dev to Test to Prod. But you cannot use part of a VM just to copy the data (which is what is sounds like you did). Blue screen of death seems very appropriate in this config.

We have not copied any thing still. We are just thinking of the options which we have, since it is taking a while to get resolved.

We just went through normal installation in our Prod server and are facing blue screen there.
