Refer a file to multiple folders

I have a business requirement , where one file need to be referenced in different folders

Example

I have a folder structure / Files in same WA as follows

product _001_SUN

 Free_game 1.exe

 Instaltion.txt

product _002_SUN

 Free_game 2.exe

product _003_SUN

 Free_game 3.exe

the instaltion.txt is same for all products , instead of copying the .txt file into

all folders , I am looking for way to reference it

Does TS provide any option for reference like mediaBin provide ?

Any hints are welcome !!

In Unix you can make a symbolic link. You may be able to use a windows shortcut.

I have never tried but I am wondering: will those sym links work through the TS UI?

With some custom coding. You will need a new CGI that displays a list of folders they can include this new file in, and when the CGI executes it makes the sym links.

You could use the metadata capture screen for this task, but you still need ot make the sym links, as part of a workflow is the easiest. You could also use a callserver to make the links as part of the MD capture screen.

My guess is that versioning does not work on the symlink. If you see the image, there is not even an edit button. The original file is versioned as always.

The symlink will probably be versioned once - like a directory. After that, it makes no sense to version the symlink as it is just a reference and not actual content.

You will want to make sure that your symlink is created using a relative path and not an absolute path. If you use the latter you will run into problems when referencing the symlink in different areas / editions.
