Update a CI from database but not able to publish the change to live

We have some backend job which will update some CIs from database side. Means after updating, the CI states in VCM is not changed, it's still published. So when I want to publish the change to live, it's totally not working. Does anyone know how to fix this?

It’s not recommended to modify content direct in DB. If you are doing so then the mod count will not increase in system tables for that object and publish state will remain the same.

Have you tried force publish option ?
