cksum / cmp not valid against backing store

I've got an interesting situation: I've got a file in our backing store that is the same in a workarea and in staging (the compare function shows 'no difference found'), yet when I run the unix chksum command on the file from the command line, I get different chksum results for the file in STAGING vs. the file in the workarea. Additionally, if I 'cmp' the files, the command finds a difference between the 2.

My understanding is that this is actually the same exact file in TeamSite, and TeamSite's metadata creates the appearance that it is in 2 locations.

Has anyone else run ito this condition and / or have an explanation to this behavior?
