Are you talking about validation-regex's - if so, I suggest you brush up on regex's (search the web or get the book Mastering Regular Expressions.

On the other hand - you could also do this more interactively with FormAPI code - you'll still want to know about regular expressions but the validation can happen directly after the user goes to the next field instead of waiting until they try to save it.

Mask is the term used in LiveSite for Regex.... But for regular dct's, they use validation-regex. Just shows how inconsistent iwov is. :-)
