Without seeing your VFE config file we could only guess - and as such a guess - try adding a class="****" attribute to your span tag and see if it still gets removed.

but do you know why adding a class would keep it in place?

is it invalid to have a span tag within an a href?? without defining a class?

Having a span tag with no class or id is kind of questionable - but I believe there is some setting in the VFE config which explicitly looks to remove such tags that have no attributes - so even though you are not actually using the attribute, having it there prevents the tag from being "cleaned up".
