Yes you need FTP to submit in this case just the assetPropertiex.xml part of the export to hybris.
I’d still like to (strongly) encourage them/you to use the Media Servlet instead for everything but very large files that need to be delivered to end users: typical exception is VIDEO assets where you use ContentByURL instead.
You can run the Media Servlet on dedicated Apache Tomcat instance and have it share same storage infrastructure as OTMM (e.g specific area on same NAS).

Subject: ContentByURL for DAM Assets
Hello Team,
I have question on DAM asset assignment in Hybris. The customer doesn’t want to store any of the assets locally on the Hybris server, and prefers to refer to the assets via URL.
As per the documentation I understand that we need to use the ContentByURL approach, is it still required to configure a FTP server if the approach we consider to use is ContentByURL ? Can you please explain.
I have configured the renderings to have type as ContentByURL and while attempting the asset assignment it reports an error saying FTP isn’t configured.
Thanks,

Some more details:
There is some logic in place that decides whether an export is triggered or not.
For assignment type “ContentByURL” as well as “URL” an export is triggered only if one of the config keysurl_attribute ormimetype_attribute is specified in the rendering configuration, like
otmm.rendering.1.url_attribute=UOIS/VIDEO_URLS/LO_RES_LOCATIONotmm.rendering.1.mimetype_attribute=UOIS/VIDEO_URLS/LO_RES_MIME_TYPE
In this case the assetProperties.xml file provided by the OTMM export is needed.
Otherwise no export will be triggered.
If you have some custom code (Hook Implementation) that relies on information provided by assetProperties.xml, you can enforce the export of the assetProperties.xml by the following config key:
otmm.export.isMandatory = TRUEBest regards, Xaver
